Captain’s Log – Stardate 2017.06.16

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside! What a glorious day at Clacton G.C. – hot as you like, but with a nice sea breeze and the course in pretty good nick.
Much of the day’s amusement was led by our resident hobo, tales of a defective Citroen (or Renault – or some other dodgy French crap) and the indecipherable mutterings of some odd northern dialect. Dear old Sid God bless him!!

I had the ‘pleasure’ of playing with him in the afternoon, with 2 points after 9 and then 10 in total, needless to say he was wearing the jesters hat after dinner – good luck to whoever has to wear it next time!!
It was great to see the return of Greg looking in really good health after his serious scare, and also my brother following his knee replacement (amazed his knee wore out before his jaw!!). More on Greg later. For all the ‘old’ Old Beals (like me) it was lovely to see Trevor Anderson having an outing with OBGS – scoring 11 points he has beaten the single digit scores of many of our first timers! We also welcomed back Gary Murphy into the fold – let’s hope we now see more of these guys moving forward.
There was some good scoring on the day – with JR scoring an impressive 40 points to win the singles. His new found domestic bliss and recent engagement obviously haven’t done his golf any harm! The main event ‘Percy’s Urns’ was won emphatically by Tony Cook and Mark Feingold with 71 points – a whole 6 points ahead of their nearest rivals Greg Stewart and Martin Herbert. I think that’s a first win for Mark Feingold – stepping out of the not inconsiderable shadow of his brother and Beal’s legend, Andy! Also, well done to Herbie with an individual score of 23 points – we’ll soon see that 28 handicap coming down.
Nearest the Pin winners were: AM 2nd Trevor G, 5th Trevor G, 7th Tony Cook. PM 2nd Brad, 5th virgin green, 7th Matt Lucas, 15th CT, 17th Gary Murphy – well done to you all.
The sweep at £10 each was won by: JR, Bowlesy, Russ, Jim, Webby, Roland and Herbie. However, the Gaming Commission have asked us to investigate following a complaint by Sutts that he didn’t win this time round.
Coming back to Greg Stewart. It gives me great pleasure to announce Greg as my Vice Captain for the remainder of this golfing year. As is tradition, this will see Greg taking over the Captain’s reins for next year. I think this is a great appointment and bodes well for the health of the Society moving forward (no pun intended!).
Look forward to seeing you all at the Captain v Secretary at Belton Woods next month. We did the team draw after dinner and it all looks a bit of a one sided affair in the favour of my team if you ask me!! Bring it on Sheppy!!!
Finally, it’s extremely sad to hear the news from Andy Lerer – all our thoughts are with him.
